Australian Made: More Than Just a Logo
Each year, Australian Made Week shines a spotlight on businesses that design, manufacture and produce their products here at home. It’s a great opportunity to recognise the companies choosing to invest in Australian manufacturing and the people behind it.
For us at ShapeScaper though, it’s never really been about only one week.
Being Australian made isn’t something we switch on for a marketing campaign or celebrate for a few days each year. It’s simply how we’ve chosen to build our business from day one. Every piece of modular steel edging and every planter we produce has been designed and manufactured here, backed by a team that lives and works in the same communities as the contractors, landscapers and homeowners using our products.
In an industry where imported products are becoming more common, it would be easy to think that where something is made doesn’t really matter anymore. After all, steel is steel… right?
The reality is a little different.
Local Knowledge Shapes Better Designs
When you’re designing products for Australian landscapes, local knowledge makes a difference. Our conditions are unique. We deal with everything from scorching summers and heavy rainfall to reactive clay soils, coastal environments and everything in between. Products need to perform in real-world conditions, not just look good in a catalogue.
Custom Work Only Happens With Local Manufacturing
That’s one of the biggest advantages of manufacturing locally. We aren’t designing products from the other side of the world and hoping they’ll suit Australian landscapes. Because we design and manufacture here in Australia, we’re also able to respond when a project calls for something outside the standard range. Whether it’s a custom planter, bespoke edging or a once-off fabricated solution, having our design and manufacturing teams under the one roof means we can work with landscape contractors to bring those ideas to life.
Contractor Feedback Feeds Straight Back Into the Range
That same flexibility also allows us to continually refine our standard product range. We’re constantly talking with landscape contractors, designers and installers who use our products every day. Their feedback helps shape product improvements, new ideas and refinements that simply wouldn’t happen if manufacturing was outsourced offshore.

Quality Control Starts on the Factory Floor
Local manufacturing also means we can keep a close eye on quality. We know exactly what materials are being used, how products are being made and the standards we expect before they leave our facility. It’s something that’s easy to take for granted, but consistency matters when contractors are relying on products to perform on-site.
There’s another side to Australian manufacturing that often goes unnoticed as well.
Every locally manufactured product supports far more than the business whose name is on the product. It supports Australian steel suppliers, transport companies, fabricators, machine operators, warehouse staff, designers and countless other people that form part of the supply chain. Choosing Australian made helps keep those industries alive and creates opportunities for skilled trades and manufacturing careers into the future.
Fewer Headaches for Contractors on a Deadline
For landscape contractors, buying Australian made can also remove a lot of uncertainty. Reliable supply, local support and the ability to speak directly with the people behind the product can make a significant difference when projects are running to tight deadlines. If there’s a question, feedback or a new idea, you’re dealing with people who understand the local industry rather than navigating overseas supply chains.
The Cost Trade-Off, Honestly
Of course, manufacturing in Australia isn’t always the cheapest or easiest option. Labour costs are higher, operating costs continue to rise and competing against mass-produced imports isn’t always straightforward. But for businesses committed to quality, innovation and supporting local industry, it’s an investment worth making.
At ShapeScaper, we’ve always believed that good products start with good design, quality materials and a genuine understanding of the landscaping industry. Manufacturing locally gives us the ability to stand behind every product we make while continually refining and improving our range based on feedback from the Australian landscaping industry.
Australian Made Week is a fantastic reminder to celebrate the businesses choosing to manufacture locally, but for us, it isn’t something that starts and finishes with a date on the calendar.
It’s the way we operate every single day of the year.
Because Australian made isn’t just a logo on our products. It’s a commitment to quality, to innovation and to supporting the industry we’re proud to be part of.
